Sy Richard Lippman
Chief Executive Officer
For over 30 years, Sy Richard Lippman has been helping investors across a wide variety of economic eras and environments. As CEO and senior managing director at L&S Advisors, Sy oversees and maintains the firm’s high compliance standards and manages its growing staff of professionals.
Sy and his partner, Ralph “Rick” Scott, originally formed L&S Advisors in 1979. During the firm’s early years, Sy managed high-net-worth client portfolios in a variety of funds. His specialties included the use of options, risk, and deal arbitrage, as well as hedge fund strategies. Merrill Lynch acquired L&S Advisors in 1997, retaining Sy as First Vice President and portfolio manager with full discretion over client assets.
In 2005, following 8 years with Merrill Lynch, Sy and Rick reestablished L&S Advisors as an independent, fee-only registered investment advisor (RIA). Then, as now, their shared vision is to make unbiased investment decisions based strictly on merit, not on commissions.
Before entering the financial sector, Sy was affiliated in a specialized marketing and management capacity with Sutro & Co; Clark Dodge & Company; and Dupont, Glore, Forgan, Inc. He also served as President and CEO of TD Materials, Inc., an international distributor of specialty metals to the aerospace industry.
Sy is a founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles and former President of Kehillat Israel Synagogue. An active blue water sailor, he is a member of the Del Rey Yacht Club. He holds a B.A. from American University in Washington, D.C. and a Juris Doctorate from the American University Law School.
Jason Jay Scott
Chief Operating Officer
Jason Jay Scott is a seasoned financial and legal services executive, with over 15 years of experience in operational management and systems. As COO of L&S Advisors, Jason oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm and takes a leading role in marketing and business development.
Prior to joining L&S Advisors, Jason served as Vice President of Business Applications at Kurtzman Carson Consultants (KCC). Over the course of 9 years, he was instrumental in growing KCC from a small boutique start-up into one of the foremost legal and financial services firms in the corporate restructuring industry. Before that, Jason worked as a corporate transactional and litigation attorney.
Jason holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Marymount University. He is admitted to practice law in California.
Director of Operations
Ian brings a deep understanding of trading and operations to his role as Director of Operations for L&S Advisors.
Prior to joining in 2016, Ian served as Senior Operations Trader for Wedbush Asset Management where he managed daily reconciliation of over 4,000 accounts totaling $1.5 Billion in AUM across 3 platforms. Ian’s industry experience began at Cadinha & Company, LLC as an Investment Trader. Ian also worked as a Security Staff Investigator at Gaven de Becker & Associates.
Ian served as a U.S. Marine in Okinawa, Japan from 2000-2004 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Hawaii Pacific University in 2008.
Ralph R. Scott
Chief Investment Officer
Ralph “Rick” Scott’s distinguished career in asset management and securities law spans more than three decades. In his current role as CIO and senior managing director at L&S Advisors, Rick draws upon his expertise in opportunistic, risk-managed investing and complex securities to actively manage portfolios for the firm’s high-net worth clients.
Since the inception of L&S Advisors in 1979, Rick has played various financial management roles. In his early career as partner and co-founder of L&S Advisors, he managed a variety of funds and individual accounts using options, deal arbitrage, and hedge fund strategies. He specialized in risk arbitrage during its peak in the late 70s through the 80s. Following the acquisition of L&S Advisors in 1997 by Merrill Lynch, Rick continued to manage client portfolios under full discretion within the brokerage firm environment.
In 2005, Rick and his partner, Sy Richard Lippman, were inspired to go back to their independent roots, reestablishing L&S Advisors as a fee-only registered investment advisor (RIA). The firm’s goal is to deliver stable, attractive returns while steadfastly protecting capital above all else.
Previously, Rick was a Senior Trial Attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and was associated with the firm of Haberman, Klein and Kassoy as Of Counsel specializing in Securities Law and Securities Litigation.
Rick is a founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles and serves on the Board of Governors at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He holds a B.A. from the University of Vermont and a Juris Doctorate from George Washington University School of Law, Washington, D.C.
Bennett Gross CFA, CAIA
As President of L&S Advisors, Bennett is responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of the firm as well as guiding the firm’s growth into new opportunities. Bennett also serves on the firm’s Investment Committee helping to establish investment guidelines for the firm’s growing list of clients.
Bennett has more than 30 years of experience in the investment management business, and most recently served as Investment Strategist for EP Wealth Advisors. Prior to EP Wealth, Bennett was the Director of Wealth management and the Director of Equities for a multi-billion dollar Registered Investment Advisor based in Santa Monica. Bennett was also the Chair of the Investment Committee and the Managing Director of Equities for a billion dollar advisory firm based in Century City. Bennett began his career in financial services at Morgan Stanley working with ultra high net-worth investors.
Bennett holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California at Irvine, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma honors society. Bennett holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation.
Bennett lives in Cheviot Hills with his wife and son.
Senior Portfolio Analyst
Heather Liu joined L&S Advisors in 2005 upon its relaunch as an independent, fee-only registered investment advisor (RIA). In her role as a portfolio analyst, she conducts security analysis and research. Heather also assists the L&S team with operational and administrative support.
Prior to L&S Advisors, Heather spent 2 years with UBS Financial Services, Inc., where she transitioned from an internship into a full-time position as a Branch Office Administrator and Client Service Associate.
Heather holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Sandra joined L&S Advisors in 2016 as a portfolio analyst. Sandra works closely with her husband Kenneth Malamed and the portfolio management team doing research on the firm’s equity holdings.
In 1985, Sandra along with Ken founded Financial Management Advisors, LLC which was eventually acquired. Before joining L&S, she worked at First Western Capital Management Company where she served as Senior Vice President and as an equity analyst.
Sandra holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (1963) and a graduate degree (1964) from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also a published author of the “Chronicle of Good Taste and Good Deeds, the Jews of Early America” and “Descendants of the Inquisition and Their Right to Know.” Sandra was named in “Who’s Who of Women in America” and is a founding member of the Founders’ Group of the USC School of Cinematic Arts and a member of the Board of Overseers of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. She is active with numerous charitable and cultural organizations worldwide including Los Angeles Philharmonic, LACMA, Sinai Temple, The Huntington Museum and the Griffith Observatory.
Sandra and Ken have been married over fifty years and enjoy three children, five grandchildren and twelve god-children.
Matt joined the L&S Advisors team in 2017 and serves as an Analyst/Relationship Manager. In this role, Matt is responsible for working closely with the portfolio management team to identify investment opportunities. In addition, Matt is responsible for providing top-quality support to the firm’s growing list of high-net worth investment clients.
Prior to joining L&S Advisors, Matt worked at an RIA in Newport, CA where he performed industry and company analysis, helping to guide the investment decisions of the portfolio managers.
Matt is a graduate with honors of UCLA where he received a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Accounting. Matt is Series 63/65 licensed and a Level 3 CFA Candidate.
Tanis Van Kirk-Lange
Senior Director of Client Services
Tanis Van Kirk-Lange has been with L&S Advisors for more than 20 years. As a client service specialist, Tanis is dedicated to building and maintaining strong client relationships and providing top-quality administrative support. It’s her goal to ensure that each and every client receives the assistance they need and that every interaction with the firm results in total satisfaction.
Prior to joining the L&S Advisors’ team, Tanis worked with Bear Sterns as a Client Services Specialist. She has also worked in the motion picture industry.
Tanis attended California Institute of the Arts and California State University, Northridge.
Debbie joined the L&S Advisors team in 2016 as a Relationship Manager. In her role, Debbie provides support and assistance to the firm’s high-net-worth clients.
Prior to joining L&S, Debbie worked at Weston Capital Management for 5 years as a relationship and operational manager.
Debbie earned her Bachelor of Arts from Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Junior Trader/Relationship Associate
Jorge joined the L&S Advisors team in 2017. As a Junior Trader/Relationship Associate, Jorge is responsible for assisting in the execution and allocation of client trades as well as providing top-quality support to the firm’s investment clients and financial advisor partners.
Prior to joining L&S Advisors, Jorge worked at Charles Schwab in Austin, TX as a Client Service Associate where he worked closely with clients to service their needs.
Jorge is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside where he received a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in finance. Jorge is also an active member of the UCR Student Alumni Association where he promotes greater awareness of UCR programs.

Kenneth D. Malamed
Senior Managing Director
As Senior Managing Director of L&S Advisors, Ken is responsible for maintaining and growing the firm’s ever expanding roster of high net worth, ultra-high net worth and institutional clientele. Ken’s focus at L&S is on income oriented securities, and he serves as a member of the firm’s Investment Committee.
Ken brings over four decades of investment industry experience servicing clients utilizing the same methodologies and strategies which have helped make him successful throughout his career. Ken’s industry experience began in 1970 where he co-founded the Financial Management Group. After seven years, Ken founded Bear Stearns Asset Management and served as President of the group. In 1985, he founded Financial Management Advisors, LLC along with his wife Sandra Malamed and served as President and Chief Investment Officer until 2008 when the firm was acquired. Before joining L&S, Ken worked at First Western Capital Management Company where he served as Vice-Chairman and CIO of the Century City office.
Ken holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance (1964) and his Juris Doctorate degree (1967) from the University of California, Los Angeles. Ken was admitted to practice law in California (1967) and is a founding member of the Founders’ Group of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, a member of the Board of Overseers of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and a member of the Chancellor’s Associates of UCLA since 1970. John Nelson joined L&S Advisors, Inc. in 2017 as Managing Director, responsible for developing mutually beneficial relationships with financial advisors and RIAs seeking portfolio management services for separately managed accounts (SMAs).
John has over 18 years in the financial services industry successfully raising capital for investment companies and asset managers. John started his career at Fidelity Investments as a Fund Sales Specialist. Prior to joining L&S, John joined Provasi Capital providing financial advisors and investors with access to selected managers and strategies to build better portfolios.
In his free time, John enjoys escaping to the Rocky Mountains with his family. John has earned a BA in Finance from Texas Tech University and holds the Series 65 License.
Leanne Sindell’s financial services career spans 30 years, with more than 20 of them specialized in wholesaling alternative investments to the broker-dealer community. As a managing director at L&S Advisors with a focus on business development, she is responsible for building and cultivating relationships with financial advisors seeking portfolio management services for separately managed accounts (SMAs).
Prior to joining L&S Advisors, Leanne was director of business development for Shinnecock Partners where she was responsible for client and broker-dealer relations, as well as marketing strategies serving registered investment advisors (RIAs) and the independent broker-dealer community.
Leanne began her financial career as a retail broker with Paine Webber and Wedbush. Since then, she has raised over $2 billion in client capital and held numerous senior sales and marketing positions within the securities and managed futures industry at companies including Campbell & Co. and ATEL equipment leasing.
Alongside her financial career, Leanne has flourished in the publishing, IP development, and design communities. As founder of TLI/IPM, a literary agency, she represented clients such as Yahoo! and various business thought leaders. As a commercial illustrator represented by Langley Creative in Chicago, IL, she created content for such clients as Forbes.com and Hallmark.
Leanne studied at universities in Sweden, England, France, and the U.S., graduating with a degree in design from Studio Bercot in Paris. She has achieved the Series 7, 65, 3, 22, and 63 licenses. She is proficient in French and Swedish.
Aaron joined L&S Advisors, Inc. in 2017 as Managing Director. In his role, Aaron is responsible for focusing on relationship management and business development of high net worth families, family offices, foundations, and institutions.
Seeing his clients’ objectives from a global, macro-economic point of view, Aaron enjoys selecting investment vehicles based on a deep understanding of balancing certainty and risk to optimize growth and capital preservation.
Aaron began his career in financial services at Julius Baer & Co.’s Private Bank in 2002 and subsequently went on to work as a securities analyst at JMG Capital Management. Aaron later joined UBS as a Client Advisor, and prior to joining L&S, Aaron worked as a relationship and portfolio manager at a Los Angeles based Registered Investment Advisor.
Active in community service, Aaron holds leadership positions within the Jewish Federation and the United Way, among other non-profit organizations.
Aaron received his B.A. from University of Southern California and his M.B.A. from Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California.
Craig joined L&S Advisors in 2016 and serves as a Managing Director of the firm. Craig utilizes both technical and fundamental analysis when looking at investments and this brings a unique perspective to the L&S investment management process.
Prior to joining L&S, Craig graduated from Amherst College in 1986 and then joined his family’s investment advisory firm, Weston Capital Management. Craig spent three decades at Weston Capital leveraging his extensive experience helping high net worth individuals with their investment needs, working on advisor compliance, and managing the investment advisory firm.
Craig has also been very active in community outreach. He has spent 5 years volunteering as a California State Nursing Home Ombudsman making sure residents of elder care facilities were getting quality and safe care. He was also the director of senior outreach for 13 years at the Parish of St. Matthew in Pacific Palisades, California. He has currently spent the last 9 years volunteering in the Emergency room of Providence St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. Craig is also a sports photographer and regularly shoots the NFL, NCAA, and high school games.
